Heroes of Might and Magic V
-Available on PCHeroes of Might and Magic returns with its newest addition to the popular game series. Like previous games in the series, Heroes of Might and Magic 5, is a turn-based fantasy strategy game with a heavy focus on creating armies, building cities, exploring and conquering enemies. The game features a campaign mode, custom game mode and multiplayer mode so there is potential for lots of play time from the game.
What is unique to Heroes of Might and Magic is that the game features a mixture of turn-based and real times ‘style’ components. Although the game is primarily turn-based, players can engage in real-time ‘style’ battles with enemies, whether this be monsters that are on the field, enemy heroes or an attempt to make siege on a fortress. Even though turns are still taken in the battles there is a much larger real time feel to the game due to how the battles are presented. Throughout the battles players can make use of their armies, their hero and the spells he/she possesses as well as any war machines that may give you the advantage over the enemy army.
The custom game mode has a few different features that are worth mentioning. In this mode players can select from the already pre-created maps, which sometimes have their own quirks and objectives attached to them; or players can generate a map. Generating a map in some games can become a long convoluted process – whereas in Heroes of Might and Magic 5, it’s done in about 3 or 4 clicks. Players simply select the map characteristics desired from a user-friendly drop down menu, the map can then be generated and when one is created that is liked – it can then be saved. Another interesting feature in the Heroes of Might and Magic series is the Hot-Seat Multiplayer mode. As the game is primarily turn based a single computer is used for multiple players to make their turns. It certainly takes a lot of the hassle out of setting multiple desktops for other multiplayer games. The game also features all the classic multiplayer modes expected, inclusive of a duelling mode.
Races
Heroes of Might and Magic is heavily fantasy based and its wide variety of factions for players to choose from certainly won’t leave you disappointed. Selecting an appropriate faction for your play-style is important as each different faction comes with their own pros, cons and abilities. Prior to the expansions players had6 different races to choose from, Necropolis (Undead), Dungeon (Dark Elves/Warlocks), Inferno (Demons), Sylvan (Elves), Haven (Humans) and Academy (Wizards). With the addition of the Hammers of Fate and the Tribes of the East expansions 2 new races were added to the game, Fortress (Orcs) and Stronghold (Dwarves). To get a better understanding of the different classes here is a quick rundown of each races.
Necropolis
Possibly one of the most over-powered races in the game. As you’d expect Necromancer’s have the ability to raise the dead, which can easily be done in the middle of a battle, for a small cost of mana. But wait, it gets better! After each battle there will often also be a number of creatures available to the player for resurrection, so even if you take some losses in battle – you still have the ability to resurrect some of your army. The Necromancer’s army primarily focuses on undead creatures; zombies, skeletons, vampires, ghosts etc. A unique ability is also given to the vampire and ghost units. When vampires attack their targets they regenerate a small amount of health which has the ability to resurrect some of their units. When ghosts are attacked by an enemy player there is a high chance that the attack will miss due to their ‘incorporeal ability’.
Dungeon
What was initially the Warlock race is now known as the ‘Dungeon’. This race has some of the classical units that have been featured in previous Heroes of Might and Magic games, including a few new and exciting ones. Some of the units that are featured in the Dungeon race are Minotaurs, Dragons etc.
Inferno
Like other races, Inferno comes with its own special ability. The Inferno ability is gating, which allows the summoning of ‘reinforcements’ to a battle which can then be placed at a specific location. The Inferno race closely resembles a demon-style race and is heavily comprised of hellish type units. Players can expect units such as succubi, imps, hell-hounds and devils. Each different unit generally also comes with a unique ability, for example the imp unit has the ability to steal mana from an enemy hero which is a definite advantage in any battle; whereas the devil for example, has the ability to teleport meaning that fortifications and obstacles on the field are no match for it.
Sylvan
The Sylvan race highly are primarily comprised of the classical fantasy characters such as sprites, unicorns etc. The Sylvan are the counterparts to the Dungeon race and their racial ability gives their armies bonuses fighting enemies that they have previously slain. Their armies tend to focus on archery which gives them a major advantage when it comes to battles.
Haven
With a plethora of different fantasy characters it is almost tradition for there to be a human race. The human race in Heroes of Might and Magic 5 is very similar to the ones that have been featured in previous games.
Academy
The Wizard race is heavily focused on magic with players being able to raise armies comprised of golems, titans, gremlins etc.
Expansion Races
Heroes of Might and Magic 5’s expansions introduce two new races to the game, Stronghold and Fortress. As with the other races these two new races come with their own unique perks and abilities.
Stronghold(Tribes of the East)
As with every fantasy game, there has to be a race that comprises of Orcs. Heroes of Might and Magic certainly does not disappoint with its Barbarian race.
Fortress(Hammers of Fate)
The Fortress is a Dwarven race which is mainly comprised of melee units, in large numbers these units can be quite ferocious and heavy hitting.
