Since the game’s released there have been multiple expansions to the game including: Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria – which is to be later released in 2012/2013.
Before Blizzard released its plethora of expansions, players were able to freely roam the continents of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. The game now features continents such as Outlands and Northerend in which players have all new trials and tribulations to conquer.
There are many different aspects to World of Warcraft, the game is literally never ending because even after you have gotten your character to the highest possible level there is still much more for you to do. Players are able to complete Dungeons, Raids, Battlegrounds, Arenas, Achievements the list is never ending. World of Warcraft is considered to be an extremely addictive game, so before you decide to take the plunge into the lands of Azeroth here’s a quick taster of the different aspects of World of Warcraft.
Dungeons
Dungeons are featured right throughout World of Warcraft. Players have access to dungeons from around level 15 or so and are completed in groups of 5 or so people. Each dungeon is unique with varying degrees of difficulty, varying monsters or “mobs” to kill which drop different items that are beneficial to your character. Once reaching the highest level possible in the game, players can enter Heroic Dungeons which require a great level of skill and tactic in order to successfully complete. The reward for completing these dungeons are epic items which are much better than any item that can be found in a normal dungeon.
Raids
Raids are extremely high end level dungeons effectively. They require extreme levels of skills and tactics for players to complete. Raids usually comprise of between 10 to 25 people, depending on the raid and take a great amount of time and experience to complete. Some of the strongest items in the game are dropped from mobs located in the raids however it is the bosses that have the greatest items. Players can expect it to take anywhere between 1-4 hours to complete a raid. It is important to note that raids are not necessarily dungeons, a ‘raid group’ can also be a group of players who wish to attack an enemy city in order to gain achievements. These raid groups will usually comprise of about 40 or so players and are good fun to be a part of.
Battlegrounds
Battlegrounds are the Player vs. Player aspect of World of Warcraft in which the two factions Alliance and Horde pit themselves against each other and attempt to complete the objective the quickest. Battlegrounds can take anywhere from 15-45 minutes depending on what the battleground is and how quick the gameplay is. Players have access to battlegrounds from level 10 and as you progress through the levels more battlegrounds become available to you. There are different types of battlegrounds as well. For example, the first battleground to become available to players is Warsong Gulch; in which the main aim is to capture the enemy flag and defend your own.
Arenas
Arenas consist of 2v2, 3v3 or 5v5 modes. They are extremely fast paced and require a great amount of skill from players. As small teams, players are placed in a small arena with an enemy team. Of which the main objective of the game is to kill or be killed. The rewards for being successful are great and much in-game honour can be earnt through becoming successful at arenas. Players are rewarded with tokens which can be used at vendors in order to purchase extremely valuable PVP gear in order to make you stronger against your opponent.
If you’re still not too sure on whether you should try World of Warcraft, try playing on the private servers which are completely free. Or you could take advantage of the fact the World of Warcraft is now free to play until level 20. Whilst there are still some restrictions in the game when playing a free to play character, it’s a great way to try and experience what World of Warcaft is about without purchasing the subscription.
